Dad's Story
On March 8, 2021, a retired postmaster from Pella, Iowa, became a resident at our King’s Garden campus. His name was Robert.
Robert worked hard and saved feverishly so that he and his wife Vicky could enjoy early retirement. But retirement didn’t suit him, so he got a part-time job. When he finally did retire it became evident, he was struggling. The diagnosis of Frontotemporal Dementia (a form of Alzheimer’s) soon followed. He fought the disease as fervently as he worked and saved all his life. But he soon needed more care than Vicky could provide. Just two years in a facility and their life savings were gone. Devastated, they only had Medicaid to rely on. Until Perry Lutheran Home invited them into their family.
Though Medicaid only pays 80% of the cost of care, Robert was welcomed to Perry Lutheran Home as so many are. Unlike others that limit the number of “Medicaid” beds (if they take Medicaid at all) Perry Lutheran Homes never turns anyone away. All are welcome. This commitment to people over profit results in a loss of over $1.5 million dollars of potential revenue for Perry Lutheran Homes every year.
The need is great, folks. Because of our Christian mission which compels us to be family not just a facility, no one goes without care regardless of ability to pay. Because care always comes first at Perry Lutheran Homes. With your partnership we can continue to “bountifully bless” families, like Robert's, whose loved ones need care.
Your generous gift ensures that Robert and many other of our most precious older adults are cherished and never forgotten.
On behalf of Robert and many others like him, thank you!
